Many build plate orders start with a size. 235 × 235 mm PEI plate. Bambu-compatible build plate. Ender 3 magnetic plate. Anycubic or Elegoo replacement build surface.
Size matters, but it is not enough. Two plates can have the same size and still behave very differently. One may be double-sided textured PEI. Another may have one smooth side and one textured side. Some are satin engineering surfaces, cool plates, FR4 / G10 plates, or special effect sheets such as PET, PEY, PEO, PED or H1H. These surfaces do not give the same adhesion, bottom finish, release behavior or durability.
For business buyers, the better question is not “Does this plate fit the printer?” but “Does this plate fit the customer, filament, use case and expected result?” That is where many wrong build plate orders begin.

The safest base range: double-sided textured PEI
For many resellers and repair businesses, double-sided textured PEI is still the safest starting point. It is familiar to customers, suitable for many daily printing needs, and easier to explain than specialty surfaces. Golden textured PEI is usually the standard option. Black textured PEI gives a cleaner and more premium appearance — but they are not exactly the same product. Adhesion, cleaning performance, scratch resistance and long-term durability should still be checked by sample testing before bulk orders.

Smooth + textured PEI: one plate to cover more needs
A double-sided plate with one smooth side and one textured side is a good upgrade from standard textured PEI. The smooth side gives a cleaner bottom finish; the textured side gives stronger grip and a matte bottom texture. Useful for customers who print different models and want flexibility without buying several plates.
But smooth PEI is not always safest for PETG or TPU. Some materials may stick too strongly to smooth PEI and damage the surface during removal. For B2B sales this matters — if a customer damages the smooth side with over-adhesion, they may think the plate quality is poor. So smooth + textured PEI is a good product, but it should not be sold without usage notes.
Satin engineering surface: balance, not decoration
Satin is not a special effect plate. It sits between smooth PEI and textured PEI. The value of satin is balance: a finer matte bottom finish than rough textured PEI, but not as glossy as smooth PEI. A useful engineering-style option for functional parts, prototypes and mixed materials.

Cool plate: useful for PLA-focused customers, not a universal plate
Cool plates are mainly for lower-temperature printing — useful for PLA-focused users, schools, makerspaces and beginner customers. The value is easier daily PLA printing and reduced need for high bed temperature. For ABS, ASA, nylon, PC or other demanding materials, cool plate is usually not the first option.
Special effect plates: good add-on products, not repair basics
PET, PEY, PEO, PED, H1H and carbon fiber texture plates can leave glossy, holographic, geometric, carbon-like or patterned effects on the bottom of printed parts. They suit decorative PLA prints, display models, gift products and finished-print sellers — but they should not replace standard PEI for repair, printer farm or industrial use.
Important distinction: a carbon fiber texture build plate does not mean it is designed for carbon-fiber-filled filament. The carbon fiber texture side is mainly a visual-effect surface, not a special plate for CF nylon or PLA unless that use case has been tested and confirmed.
FR4 / G10: a specialty option for technical users
FR4 / G10 (garolite) is more functional than visual. Some users consider it for nylon printing or as an alternative to PEI. Real performance depends on filament type, bed temperature, surface preparation, printer setup and sometimes glue or release agent. It is a good specialty option, not a default first plate for beginners.
