From BOM to packaging — how to build practical FDM maintenance kits and resin accessory kits that match the real user, not just the box.

A custom 3D printer tool kit should not start from the box. It should start from the user.

A repair shop, a school, a printer brand and an online accessory seller may all need tool kits, but they do not need the same kit. Some kits are used for FDM printer maintenance. Some are prepared for resin printer cleaning and handling. Some are included inside a printer package. Some are sold as small accessory sets.

So the real work is not simply putting tools into a box. The real work is deciding what the kit should help the user do.

The project usually starts with a BOM

Most custom tool kit projects begin with a BOM or item list, including Allen keys, side cutters, scrapers, nozzle cleaning needles, PTFE tube cutters, tweezers, screwdrivers, wrenches, lubricating grease, thermal grease, gloves, resin funnels, filters, cleaning cloths or small replacement parts.

But a BOM is only a starting point. A scraper may have several thickness options. A side cutter may have different quality levels. A funnel may look correct in photos but may not fit the resin bottle or vat use case. Before discussing the final package, we check the actual items:

  • Are the products available?
  • Are the sizes suitable?
  • Does the quality level match the customer's market?
  • Can the items be packed together safely?
  • Does the kit feel useful, or does it only look full?

FDM and resin kits should not be treated as the same product

FDM printer users usually care about maintenance, adjustment and small part replacement. Their kits may include nozzle cleaning needles, Allen keys, side cutters, scrapers, PTFE tube cutters, tweezers, screwdrivers, small wrenches, lubricating grease, thermal grease and spare screws.

Resin printer users have a different problem. Their work is more about cleaning, filtering, handling resin safely and protecting the vat. Resin accessory kits may include paper filters, stainless steel funnels, silicone funnels, disposable gloves, cleaning cloths, plastic scrapers, vat cleaning tools, brushes, mixing sticks or UV safety glasses.

The better question is: who will use this kit, and what job does it need to finish?

Packaging should follow the product list, not the other way around

A box may look professional in a photo, but after the tools are placed inside, it may be too loose, too heavy or too expensive. A simple bag may save cost, but sharp tools or metal parts still need proper separation. The right packaging depends on the product content, target cost, user scenario and sales channel.

Foam insert layout needs real product testing

If the slot is too loose, the tool moves during transport. If too tight, workers pack slowly and users struggle to take the tool out. For foam insert projects, we test the layout with real products — tool length, handle thickness, blade shape, weight, edge direction and taking-out direction all matter.

Samples help confirm the kit before bulk production

The sample shows whether the product list is correct, whether the tools feel acceptable, whether the packaging method works, and whether the final kit matches the customer's expectation. It is much cheaper to adjust one sample kit than to fix hundreds or thousands of packed kits later.
